CrashScan | Accident Detector

CrashScan | Accident Detector is a field-focused diagnostic utility that helps collision investigators, claims professionals, and repair technicians extract and interpret vehicle crash data quickly and reliably. The app pairs with an OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to interrogate multiple onboard modules and, where available, read Event Data Recorder (EDR) records to produce contextual summaries of impact severity, orientation, pre-crash speed and driver inputs. Designed for practical use at the scene or in the shop, CrashScan | Accident Detector emphasizes clear data presentation, exportable reports, and workflow tools that improve evidence collection and reduce time spent assembling technical details.

Key features

CrashScan | Accident Detector reads a broad set of vehicle computer modules and retrieves EDR (black box) values when supported by the vehicle. It identifies module types, timestamps, and event records in human-readable form so investigators can see which systems recorded an incident and what they captured.

The app integrates with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to provide a wireless connection to the vehicle. Pairing is straightforward: enable Bluetooth, select the adapter, and follow on-screen prompts to begin a scan. A clear status bar shows connection quality and remaining steps.

Coverage extends across thousands of year/make/model combinations, improving the chance of collecting relevant data from many modern vehicles. When EDR data is present, generated reports summarize measured values and translate technical entries into contextual metrics such as approximate delta-v, impact vector orientation and pre-event vehicle speed ranges.

Reports include occupant and seatbelt indicators, common g-force reference points for comparison, and injury risk flags that help prioritize follow-up medical or repair actions. Reports are designed to be exportable and shareable in common document formats, with metadata fields for case number, scene notes, witness identifiers and timestamping to support chain-of-custody needs.

Usage, controls and progression

The app workflow follows a clear progression to guide users through a scan: connect to the adapter, identify the vehicle by VIN or manual selection, perform a module scan, review retrieved events, and finalize a contextual report. Controls are optimized for field use: large tap targets, progress indicators, and confirmation prompts reduce accidental input while working outdoors or in low light.

For each scan step the interface presents accessible controls for retrying communications, pausing a scan, and bookmarking modules of interest. A staged approach means even new users can complete a basic investigation quickly, while experienced examiners can dive deeper into raw module values and timestamp logs.

Report customization, export and replay value

Reports are customizable so investigators can choose which sections to include, add investigator notes, attach photos taken on scene and tag key values for later review. Saved scans remain on the device for offline access and re-analysis, supporting replay value when a case requires follow-up or a second opinion. Export options let users create shareable reports suitable for claims departments, repair shops or legal review without requiring a persistent internet connection.

Visual style and accessibility

The app uses a high-contrast, minimal visual style intended for quick comprehension of technical values. Graphical elements emphasize vectors and severity bands where applicable, while textual summaries translate numeric outputs into plain-language observations. Accessibility considerations include adjustable text sizes, clear labels and color choices that maintain readability in bright sunlight or on busy traffic scenes. Optional audible prompts and haptic confirmations provide additional guidance when hands-free feedback is useful.

Limitations and legal considerations

To retrieve full crash data the app requires a compatible Bluetooth OBD adapter and a vehicle equipped with retrievable EDR modules; not every supported make and model will have stored event data. Users must also be aware of local legal and privacy rules: consent or authorization may be required before downloading vehicle data. CrashScan | Accident Detector presents privacy and consent information during installation and prior to any data extraction to help teams remain compliant with jurisdictional requirements.

Developer, support and learning resources

The app is developed by Collision Sciences, Inc., a company focused on forensic collision analysis tools and investigator resources. The developer provides in-app help, step-by-step tutorial videos and documentation to accelerate learning and ensure reproducible results. Technical support, release notes and privacy terms are available from the developer; installing the app indicates agreement to the provided terms, and users can withdraw by uninstalling if they no longer wish to retain local data or receive updates.
